Political analyst Clancy DuBos said the Legislature’s failure to overturn any veto this week strengthens the hand of the Governor.
DuBos said calling the veto session was a gamble that didn’t pay off for Republican Legislative leadership who now know they can’t override the Democratic Governor’s vetoes.
“This strengthens his hand in dealing with the Legislature on major issues like redistricting, the budget, and other things,” said DuBos who said the redistricting battle is expected to take place sometime next year.
DuBos said this historic veto override session established an expectation that finding 26 votes in the Senate and 70 in the House will be very difficult for Republicans.
“This is going to be the point of reference going forward for veto sessions,” said DuBos who said this debacle is “egg on the face” of House and Senate leaders.
It’s possible this veto session debacle could cost Speaker Clay Schexnayder his position. The Louisiana Republican Party issued a statement after the failure to override the transgender sports bill mentioning Schexnayder’s position could be reconsidered. The statement mentioned demanding retribution against Democrats who voted against the override, demanding they be stripped of committee chair status. It is unclear though how the state party could follow through with this threat to the Speaker.
