LSU swimmer Brooks Curry is a gold medal winner at the Summer Olympics as he helped the U.S. 4X100 meter freestyle relay team take the gold. LSU Associate Swim Coach Stephen Mellor says he’s in awe of what Curry accomplished.
“It’s something we very much spoke into existence, it took a couple of years of hard work, and a lot of long hours, a lot of sacrifices,” said Mellor.
Curry swam in the preliminaries and helped them take the lead in that event. Curry finished his leg of the race with a time just under 49-seconds as the American relay team took first place in the second leg. Mellor says he watched the race from home.
“It was odd, the coach inside you is screaming at the TV and trying to give you pointers and all that kind of thing, fortunately, my wife was able to tell me, he can’t hear you from there,” said Curry.
Curry did not swim in the Finals, but all swimmers who participate in the prelims or the finals receive a medal. He’s the first Olympian swimmer in LSU history to take home a gold medal at the Olympic games.
Mellor says with the Summer games getting pushed back a year, Curry took advantage.
“We put in some serious work, it was early to mid-April I realized that he was going to have as good a shot as anyone in the United States to make that team,” said Curry.
