Three teenagers were killed in a crash Monday afternoon in Lincoln Parish and a fourth teenager is fighting for his life. State Police spokesperson Trooper Michael Reichardt said a Kia Optima driven by 19-year-old Lajermanique Nichols was traveling on Works Road south of Ruston and for unknown reasons left the road and struck a tree.
“All four of the occupants inside the vehicle were ejected. None of them were wearing their seatbelts. So, three of four died on the scene and they said the fourth one is in serious, serious condition at the hospital fighting for their life right now,” said Reichardt.
17-year-old Lajavion Nichols and 16-year old Javious Holden were pronounced dead on the scene and 18-year old Edward Kary was transported to a local hospital.
Reichardt said speed was a factor in the crash and the teens were all well thought of in the community.
“One of them had graduated, the rest of them were in school still at Jonesboro High. I talked to the superintendent of the school, they were football players and good kids in the community, and this is just a sad day for that whole community and that school,” said Reichardt.
The crash remains under investigation and Reichardt said toxicology samples were taken. He also reminds motorists to always take time to put on their seatbelts before they get behind the wheel.
“It’s just a day for that whole community, and for those families. Please just make sure and wear your seatbelt regardless of where you’re going,” said Reichardt.
