Hurricane Ida is also impacting gasoline prices and the high demand for gas is making it hard to find fuel in the Bayou State. Gas Buddy’s Petroleum Analyst, Patrick De Haan said prices could increase five to fifteen cents a gallon in Louisiana over the next week or two.
“Infant so many refineries are down in Louisiana that this is likely to have an impact on the national average, it’s really contingent on how long it takes to restore some of these refineries,” said De Haan.
On Tuesday the City of Hammond along with and leaders in Ascension Parish made a plea for gas due to outages.
Motorists should prepare to see an increase in gas prices, but De Haan said we shouldn’t see a massive price hike overnight.
“It will likely be more measured in pennies per day for a couple of days at least that this point. The situation could worsen though, we could see prices rise a little bit more if the refineries remain down for several weeks,” said De Haan.
De Haan said it’s worth noting that one refinery in Louisiana was impacted by floodwaters from Ida which doesn’t bode well for gas prices.
“That may lead to some extended downtime at least at one facility, we will have to see what the word is on the rest of them, to understand if the price impact will be more severe or longer-lasting,” said De Haan.
According to GasBuddy average price per gallon in Louisiana is $2.80.
