Houma Police are mourning the loss of one their own. 21-year-old Austin Bush was killed in a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning after his car struck a log and ended up in a drainage basin and became fully submerged. Houma Police Chief Dana Coleman fondly recalls Bush’s goal to serve the public when he interviewed for the job.
“That’s very honorable of him to jump into a profession like this and all he wants to do is serve his community,” said Coleman.
Coleman said Bush was just weeks away from completing the cadet academy and was driving to his post at the Houma Civic Center which was a distribution site for Hurricane Ida supplies. Coleman said the recent weeks have been challenging for those in the community since the hurricane and the death of a young officer is even more difficult.
“Our law enforcement community will lean on each other as we deal with the tragedy of Officer Bush. We’re just going to throw our arms around his family and walk with them through this whole situation until we all get through it,” said Coleman.
Coleman said Bush had a bright future with the department and the young cadet told him since he was a child, he always knew he wanted to be a police officer.
“He always admired them, admired the way they handled situations when they were in his presence and he just wanted to be a part of the team,” said Coleman.
State Police are investigating the crash.
