Louisiana is offering hunters the chance to win money by assisting the state in its surveillance efforts for Chronic Wasting Disease in deer. LDWF Deer Program Manager Johnathan Bordelon says hunters and taxidermists will be entered into a contest to win up to $1000 when they submit a sample from a mature buck harvested this deer season.
“A submission in this case would be to bring a head with approximately three inches of neck attached, we would actually be able to remove the sample and they would be able to leave with the head if they so chose,” said Bordelon.
Bordelon says submitting a sample of your deer for testing of CWD could win you a gift card for $1000 or $500. CWD has not yet been detected among Louisiana’s deer herd but has been in most of our bordering states. He says LDWF is being vigilant to determine IF Louisiana deer are affected.
“Adult bucks typically have the highest prevalence rates where the disease is found, of course here in Louisiana we have not detected the disease, which is great news,” said Bordelon.
He says they are aiming to get approximately 12-hundred samples from across the state.
Participants are asked to contact their local LDWF Field Office to submit a sample. Hunters become eligible to win $1,000 gift card by submitting a sample to LDWF for testing from a mature buck harvested. Taxidermists will be entered to win the $500 gift card. Both drawins will be held March 18, 2022.
