The 16-year-old driver of a fatal crash that killed two teens in Madisonville last month has been arrested after a toxicology report came back indicating she was under the influence during the crash. St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Captain Lance Vitter said the driver faces numerous charges for the August 4th single-car crash on Guste Island Road.
“Three counts of vehicular homicide and then the count of vehicular injury was in reference to the girl seriously injured,” said Vitter.
That teen has now been released from the hospital.
Vitter said speed was also a factor in the tragic crash that claimed the lives of Makayla Bonrua and Chloe Shartle.
“And two girls that will never be the same and families for that matter too. It’s unfortunate that it culminated in an arrest,” said Vitter.
Vitter said investigators met with the families of all involved and informed them of the charges. Vitter said they were waiting for a toxicology report which routinely takes several weeks
“Now it will be up to the District Attorney’s Office to screen the case and prosecute it, but it’s always hard when we’re dealing with young adults,” said Vitter.
Vitter said the driver was transported and booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Correctional Center in Tangipahoa Parish.
