Louisiana SNAP recipients are getting an increase in their monthly benefits. That word comes from Shavana Howard, DCFS Assistant Secretary for Family Support.
“Starting October 1 households will see an increase in the average monthly benefit they’ll receive of roughly 36 dollars per person,” said Howard.
Overall in Louisiana, the average monthly food stamp benefit increase will be 12 to 20-dolalrs per person.
The increase is the first cost adjustment by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to its Thrifty Food Plan in over 45 years.
Howard says upping the monthly maximum for SNAP benefits will give recipients a better shot at affording the cost of a healthy diet and dealing with higher food prices overall.
“We’re excited because it gives everyone who’s on SNAP better options,” said Howard.
She says this increase in SNAP benefits will help out a lot of people in Louisiana. According to Howard, those receiving SNAP in the state totaled more than 832-thousand people in August, nearly half of whom are under the age of 18.
