After a multi-parish shooting spree, two are dead and three are critically injured. State Police say 31-year-old Matthew Mire is now in custody after Saturday shootings in Ascension, Livingston, and East Baton Rouge Parishes. Colonel Lamar Davis said one of the fatalities is 19-year veteran LSP Master Trooper, Adam Gaubert.
“Preliminary information indicates that Trooper Gaubert was shot and killed in the area in which an early morning homicide occurred,” said Davis.
Gaubert’s body was found inside his patrol car Saturday evening near Dutton Road in Ascension Parish approximately 12 hours after an earlier shooting happened in the area involving the suspect. The length of time it took to discover Gaubert’s body is under investigation.
Mire is believed to have shot and injured two people in Livingston Parish, then shot and killed his relative Pamela Adair and injured her significant other in Ascension Parish. Along with another trooper elsewhere that left the trooper’s vehicle bullet-ridden
Shortly after 10 PM Saturday when Mire was apprehended in the Hoo Sooo Too Road area. Ascension Parish Sheriff Bobby Webre said they still don’t know what motived the suspect to go on a shooting rampage.
“A lot of unanswered questions and we still do not know the motive, we don’t know why this guy shot five people today and tried to shoot a sixth,” said Webre.
According to The Advocate Mire had been staying with his mother since his girlfriend died of an overdose.
Webre said Mire abandoned a stolen vehicle and took off on foot. Mire was reportedly taken into custody without incident in the area along the Ascension and East Baton Rouge parish line after law enforcement swarmed the area. Mire sustained injuries from a K-9 bite and a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg.
“Let’s hope that he doesn’t hurt anyone else for the rest of his life because he should be in jail for the rest of his life,” said Webre.
Mire was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and charges include First Degree Murder of a Police Officer and Attempted First Degree Murder of a Police Officer.
