As Louisianans sit down for a Thanksgiving dinner Thursday, know that the price tag for the meal is lower than the national average. That’s according to the Louisiana Farm Bureau and spokesman Avery Davidson on the costs of a dinner to feed ten people. “The average cost for Louisiana is $57.41, again that’s $11.41 less than the national average of $68.72,” says Davidson.
But, he says compared to 2019, a Thanksgiving meal in the Bayou State this year costs about five dollars more, no thanks to inflation and the nearly two-year-old global COVID-19 pandemic.
Davidson says regardless of the price, the main staples for a Thanksgiving dinner in the U.S. and Louisiana are also among the cheapest worldwide. “For the most part, it’s still the most affordable, most abundant food source anywhere in the world here in the United States and we have our farmers and ranchers to thank for that,” says Davidson.
A lot of folks can’t bypass having sweet potato-something on the Thanksgiving dinner table and Davidson says even those veggies cost less in Louisiana than the national average. Davidson says, “So, three pounds of sweet potatoes here in Louisiana you’re going to pay an average of $2.45, it’s more than $3.00 for the national average.” He says you can even pay less by buying directly from a grower of sweet potatoes.
Sadly, by the way, Davidson says the farmer’s share of your 57-dollar meal this Thanksgiving is only $4.59.
