The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana is looking for volunteers to help plant 600 trees in Lake Maurepas near Manchac this weekend. Communications Director James Karst says volunteers 16 and older will travel by boat to plant various types of trees. “We’re going to be planting cypress trees, red swamp maple, water tupelo and this is an important project because it is helping to restore habitats,” said Karst, those that he says have been disrupted by previous hurricanes and storms.
Karst says there will be two shifts, one at 9 a.m. the other at noon, on both Friday and Saturday for volunteers to take part in the tree planting. He says, “planting new vegetation, new trees help to anchor the very soft soil and ensure that it’s safe there.”
Karst says the volunteer operation will include snacks and drinks and the equipment needed to plant the trees, and as for those who want to give of their time for the project Karst told us “you should be physically fit and at least 16-years old. The way to find out about it or to register is to go to our website and then click on volunteer or click on events.”
