Preliminary data from Moderna indicates their COVID booster shot increases antibody levels against the Omicron variant. LSU Health New Orleans Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Fred Lopez said while it’s still early data and hasn’t undergone a thorough scientific review…
“But it is helpful information to know and reinforces what has been recommended now which are boosters for everyone 16 years of age and older,” said Lopez.
Lopez said Moderna’s announcement of significant booster protection against Omicron models data released from Pfizer and their booster shot.
“To have at least two vaccines which seem to increase antibody levels against the Omicron variant is encouraging but again we’re going to need real-life world studies in order to prove it,” said Lopez.
Less than 33% of the population in the US is boosted. Lopez said with Omicron sweeping the country and COVID cases and hospitalizations on the uptick in Louisiana more individuals need to prioritize their third shot.
“And we have some information here that shows us that we have some vaccines that can significantly increase antibody levels against those variants, we should take advantage of them,” said Lopez.
Lopez also advises if you are gathering outside of your immediate home for the holidays or traveling, to get tested for COVID before, and when you return.
