Beginning January first, the flower or smokable form of medical marijuana will be available and legal for patients in Louisiana. A bill allowing dispensaries to legally sell the traditional form of cannabis passed in the regular legislative session this year. Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain oversees product testing and regulations for medical marijuana.
“At the nine medical marijuana pharmacies, each pharmacy can dispense up to 2.5 ounces or 71 grams of raw approved product each 14 days,” said Strain.
Strain says you must have a prescription from a licensed medical provider to legally use marijuana in Louisiana.
“And I have one of the listed medical conditions in order to get that recommendation, take that recommendation to the pharmacy, so under the Louisiana law they will be allowed to sell the non-processed form,” said Strain.
The current forms of medical marijuana, edibles, metered-dose inhalers, syringes, and topical creams are still available at dispensaries in addition to the raw form that begins sales on Saturday. Strain says like the other forms, the flower form also goes through a battery of tests.
“It’s tested and we are very careful with that, it’s the same as we do for every other form that’s sold for consumption,” said Strain.
Medical marijuana in its natural form is cheaper to process compared to the other forms.
