LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward has named Matt McMahon as the new head coach of the Fighting Tigers after leading Murray State for the last seven years. McMahon led the Racers to four Ohio Valley Conference titles and three NCAA tournament bids. John Wright, sports editor at the Murray Ledger, says there’s a lot to like about McMahon.
“He is never under prepared and he really, really seeks the best for his players, he is definitely the epitome of a player’s coach I believe,” said Wright.
Murray State ranked in the top 10 in offensive efficiency and in the top 20 defensively this past season, the type of balance necessary to win big. But job one will be trying to bring some players to Baton Rouge after what should be a massive exodus. Wright says McMahon is a talented recruiter with a template for what he wants in a student-athlete.
“The thing that he talked about more than anything on the court, is unselfishness, toughness and accountability, he has a specific idea of the player he wants and he targets those and tries to get them to fit into the system,” said McMahon.
McMahon has been highly sought after, with his name connected to other Power 5 openings. Wright says that’s with good reason, and the fan base should embrace him pretty quickly.
“He is always has been a very accessible guy, he absolutely would be great anywhere he wants to go, there is no doubt about that any school would want to have him,” said Wright.
