Vice President Kamala Harris is in the Bayou State today, highlighting the need for broadband access in rural areas. Harris will be in Sunset announcing a $30-million grant for high-speed internet in Acadiana. New Orleans Congressman Troy Carter who’s accompanying Harris on her visit, says limited access to broadband discourages business investors.
“And particularly now made it very difficult for our young people to stay up to date with classroom settings or even business people to where broadband has become such a necessity,” said Carter.
Carter who also served the state legislature worked on legislation to expand broadband access in the state, and now as a Congressman, says he’s very excited about how the infrastructure bill will impact even more individuals.
“We appropriated some $65-billion total for infrastructure across the country. Of that Louisiana will get a minimum of $100 million to help provide broadband coverage across the state of Louisiana,” said Carter.
And while flying with VP Harris, Carter says he took advantage of the travel time to discuss things the economy, the need for an expedited patterns and practices policy with state police…
“And we continue to talk about the need to rebuild parts of our state that are still devastated from Ida, and even previous storms,” said Carter.
Carter says he also advocated for more resources for small businesses and restaurants as they recover from the pandemic.
