Ponchatoula-based candy maker Elmer Chocolate has been producing sweets since 1855, but the last year has presented some challenges in meeting the demand for Easter.
“There’s been a corn starch shortage so there was a limit to how many Heavenly Hash eggs we could make and then we also had interruptions with our pecan supply, so it has affected our pecan egg supply,” said Elmer Chocolate CEO Rob Nelson.
Nelson says supply is a little light this year, but demand is high as the confectionary business has done well during the COVID pandemic.
“It’s out there, maybe a little tough to find right now, but I can tell you made it to all of the major retailers in our area,” said Nelson.
Elmer’s produces three different types of Easter candies, Gold Brick Egg, Heavenly Hash and Pecan Eggs. So which one is the biggest seller?
“Each year it’s neck and neck, Gold Brick and Heavenly Hash, one year it’s Heavenly Hash, the next year it’s Gold Brick, for certain those are the two popular pieces,” said Nelson.
