The Louisiana House approved Oil City Representative Danny McCormick’s bill to allow adult non-felons to conceal carry a gun without a permit or training on a 64 to 27 vote.
“This bill would not allow anyone to carry a concealed weapon or unless they are already allowed to open carry,” said McCormick.
Last year, Governor John Bel Edwards vetoed a “constitutional carry” bill because it did not require training to conceal carry. In order to conceal carry now, a Louisiana resident must get a permit, which requires training in order to get a permit.
During discussion on the House floor on Wednesday, an amendment was added to McCormick’s measure that would result in State Police offering a free online training course, but it would be optional for the gun owner to take.
McCormick believes training should not be required.
“Constitutional carry means no required training that’s the definition of constitutional carry so that’s the reason for my objection,” said McCormick.
But the amendment for State Police to offer a free optional gun safety training class was added to the bill that heads to the Senate for its consideration.
