The “Buckle Up in Your Truck” highway safety campaign begins Saturday and runs for the next week. Louisiana Highway Safety Commission spokesperson Mark Lambert says law enforcement agencies will focus on making sure pick-up truck drivers and their passengers are buckled up.
“And not wearing a seatbelt can cause some injury in a crash and beginning on Saturday, you definitely run a higher risk of getting a $50 ticket for not wearing your seatbelt,” said Lambert.
Lambert says they are targeting pick-up trucks because these vehicles are more likely to roll over in a crash.
“If you are not buckled up when that vehicle is rolling over, you are at a greater risk of injury or even death,” said Lambert.
Lambert says surveys also show drivers and passengers are less likely to buckle up when they are in a pick-up truck.
“Drivers and passengers in the front seat of a pickup are actually 9% less likely to wear their seat belts than drivers and passengers in other cars, when you look at the back seat it’s actually less, 65%,” said Lambert.
