The success of the New Orleans Pelicans has led to a surge in popularity for the franchise. Rel Myers, the co-founder of The Pels 12 fan group, says fans are meeting up to support the team and local businesses as well.
“The bars that we’ve reached out to and the bars that have reached out to us, everybody has been super helpful and we’re still just trying to expand and find new places that we can go and try to help bring a little bit more business to the local economy,” she said.
Over the past few weeks, as the team moved closer to the playoffs, Myers says the franchise has reached out to her group and others to provide support for the growing fanbase.
“That’s been huge to have their support,” Myers said. “To know that they see us and they support us and they know about what we’re doing and they’re doing what they can to help us bring people together as well.”
As the Pelicans return home for Game 3 tonight, Myers says The Pels 12 will be out in full force, and she expects New Orleans to show up and show out as only it can.
“I always try to compare this one to that 2018 playoff run,” said Myers. “I think that this is going to be even more intense than those home games were in that first round.”
New Orleans routed Portland in two home games as part of a 4-0 sweep of the Trail Blazers that season.
Both games three and four have already sold out.
