Senate candidate Luke Mixon has been officially endorsed by fellow Democrat, Governor John Bel Edwards. Mixon is one of three announced candidates who will face off with incumbent Republican John Kennedy. UL-Monroe Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley said Edwards’ endorsement is a boost for the Baton Rouge pilot’s campaign.
“His endorsement for Mixon, might help Mixon separate and give him a clear path to winning the primary,” said Stockley.
In addition to endorsing the Bunkie native, Edwards is headlining a fundraiser for Mixon in New Orleans on June 16th. Stockley said because Mixon doesn’t have much name recognition and he’ll need to raise as much as possible.
“Dollars is going to pay for his advertising, his television, and his radio and internet and travels. Governor Edwards could certainly give the Mixon campaign a financial boost,” said Edwards.
Stockley said Mixon and Edwards share not only political similarities they both were raised in small towns and served in the military. Edwards was a WestPoint graduate and a former Army Airborne Ranger, Mixon is a Naval Academy and TOP GUN graduate and a former fighter pilot.
“A lot of commonalities with Luke Mixon. That should make it easier for voters who support Governor Edwards to provide them with some clue as to who Luke Mixon is, and what they might want to do at the polls,” said Stockley.
Activist Gary Chambers and Vacherie native Syrita Steib have also announced their candidacy for Senate.
