Governor John Bel Edwards said he will testify before the legislative oversite committee investigating the May 2019 death of motorist Ronald Greene while in state police custody. Edwards said he viewed Lt. John Clary’s body camera footage in the Fall of 2020 days before he arranged for Greene’s family to see it.
“It’s my understanding that it was also shown to them when they came in a few days later. What I don’t understand it why that Clary video wasn’t included in the investigative file that was given to the district attorney in, I think it was August of 2019,” said Edwards.
Edwards said there has been much speculation about what he knew and when concerning Greene’s death. Edwards said the Greene family attorney also viewed the body camera video and took notes that referred specifically to the Clary video.
“I think this is another instance of the media reports getting the substance of the report just very wrong, and I don’t know how to account for that,” says Edwards.
The legislative oversite committee has heard testimony from state troopers and Ronald Greene’s mother Mona Hardin. Governor Edwards has been asked to answer questions and he said he plans to fully cooperate.
“What I just told you is exactly how it happened and that’s what I intend to tell folks downstairs when I testify,” said Edwards.
Edwards did mention a possible scheduling conflict with June 16th, but he does plan to answer lawmakers’ questions.
