A bill to establish colleges as a “hunger-free campus” in Louisiana has been signed into law. University of Louisiana System President Jim Henderson praises the law and says it’s designed to address food insecurities among college students.
“And very welcome legislation. legislation that addresses a need that is hidden from view,” said Henderson.
The law establishes a task force to create action plans focused on food insecurities on college campuses. Henderson says when he was at Northwestern State a group of students started a food pantry on campus and it quickly expanded due to demand.
He says as school tuition and the cost of living has increased over the years and the current economy it’s only made the issue of hunger even more real on college campuses.
“This hunger free campus idea helps us to absolve that perfect storm and couldn’t come at a more opportune time,” said Henderson.
