Cooking out for the 4th of July will cost more this year. Louisiana Farm Bureau spokesperson Avery Davidson said each year the American Farm Bureau Federation surveys grocery stores across the country for the average price of burgers, pork chops and all the fixings.
“It’s going to cost about $69.68 to be able to feed 10 people. And that’s up 17% from last year,” said Davidson.
But in the southeast the average price of a cookout for ten is $64.31.
Davidson said that breaks down to just under $7 per person but it’s still a sizeable increase from last year. On the bright side he said the cost of strawberries, sliced cheese and potato chips are down from last year, however…
“The biggest increase came in the cost for two pounds of ground beef, it’s up 36% from last year to about $11.12 on average,” said Davidson.
He said the reasons for the increase in prices are supply chain issues, the war in Ukraine and gas prices.
“A lot of people don’t realize that fuel prices impact what you pay at the grocery store greatly because all of these things have to be transported,” said Davidson.
And while food prices are higher, Davidson said there’s a common misconception that farmers are making more. He said on average on eight cents from each dollar spent makes it back to your local farmer.
