Two generations ago, classrooms were glued to televisions watching Apollo moon missions. The last Apollo mission ended about thirty years before today’s generation of students were born. Hannah Populus didn’t see the first moon launches either, but she’s really excited about Artemis. The Baton Rouge teacher has brought that excitement to her students at Parkview Baptist School.
“They’ve been really excited to learn about new things and they ask me all the time questions so it’s been really exciting for me,” Populus says.
Populus is an English teacher. She fell in love with space travel after learning about it in college. She loves it so much she incorporates the theme into writing exercises. Recently the class pretended they were going to Mars.
“We talked about what that shuttle might look like, what that long seven-month trip might look like,” she said
Cohen Carmouche is a student in Populus’ class. He says the teacher’s enthusiasm is contagious.
“And everybody seemed interested in it and how we were getting back to the mood and what happens when we were in space,” Carmouche says.
Carmouche says he is now considering a career as a NASA engineer
