After the Labor Day holiday, it usually gets busy during election years. Federal elections are coming up in two months. But political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says don’t expect it to get much nosier in Louisiana.
“The Congressional races are like ‘ho hum’ they have minor opponents. Senator John Kennedy has two Democratic opponents but neither of them has a lot of money. We’re getting ready to see Kennedy spend upwards of $20 million on television in a short period of time,” Pinsonat says.
Pinsonat says southwest Louisiana congressman Clay Higgins is in a race that could become competitive because of Higgins’ low fundraising totals.
“Higgins has never been a great money raiser and that’s one of the reasons I think he has an opponent. If his opponent can raise a lot of money in a short period of time then you’re going to have a battle on television, you’re going to have a battle at the grass roots level,” Pinsonat says.
Higgins’ most well-known opponent is Lafayette attorney Holden Hoggatt. Pinsonat says while voters get a bit of a breather this year, next year will be a political barnburner because all statewide offices are up for grabs.
“You’ll have an open governor’s seat with as many as nine Republicans and two or three Democrats. Every legislator, house and senate member will be challenged for the most part,” Pinsonat says.
The federal primary election is on November 8th. The runoff will be on December 10th.
