Luke Mixon releases his first TV ad for U.S Senate. In it, the pro-life Democrat said he supports codifying Roe v. Wade because Republican-backed abortion bans force rape victims to give birth. ULM Political Science Professor Joshua Stockley said the message is a political risk in such a conservative state
“That’s good stuff for a democrat but I suspect that mudding the Roe waters is going to make things more difficult,” said Stockley.
The Mixon campaign is reportedly spending six figures on the TV ad in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Monroe. And because TV is so expensive, Stockley said running an ad in September is significant, because it indicates his campaign has the financial backing to do so. Stockley also said it’s needed because Mixon’s name recognition remains low.
“Senator Kennedy still has such a considerable advantage, and at this point, I suppose something is better than nothing,” said Stockley.
Incumbent Republican Senator John Kennedy has unveiled his second TV campaign ad highlighting his votes to cut taxes, increase paychecks, fight crime and stand up to China. Stockley said he expects Kennedy will not stray far from how he won his first senatorial campaign.
“When you are the front-runner like he is, it’s the safest way to campaign. And I would expect this is going to be what he does for the next couple of months,” said Kennedy.
The other major Democrats in the race, Gary Chambers and Syrita Steib, have yet to release TV ads.
