Crowley state Representative John Stefanski announced on Monday he will run for Attorney General of Louisiana in 2023. The 38-year-old Republican lawmaker is currently chairman of the House & Governmental Affairs Committee, which oversaw redistricting earlier this year.
Stefanski says he expects the A.G.’s office to be an “open seat” next fall.
“I can bring a lot to the table I believe I have these tools in order to be able to handle the job, and the experience to handle to the job so i’m excited,” said Stefanski.
Jeff Landry is expected to run for Governor next year. Stefanski says, if elected, he would work to make Louisiana safer and more secure.
“My focus in particular would be really to focus on violent crimes. I just keep hearing more and more from law enforcement how much of rise especially in our major cities were having with violent crime. I would really look to use every resource that office has available,” said Stefanski.
Stefanski says he’ll continue Landry’s work to defend Louisiana’s abortion laws, and concentrate of bolstering the A.G.’s cyber crimes division, to help stop scammers, hackers and those who use the internet to prey on others. He says he’ll also be a watchdog against federal overreach.
“You know we see more and more Federal Government try and do these sweeping changes throughout our country and these many times don’t often fit with Louisiana. So i think when that opportunity arrives that you have to be ready to defend the state and step up to federal government where we see overreach,” said Stefanski.
Other possible candidates Republican Liz Murrill, who currently works at the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office, Union/Lincoln Parish district attorney John Belton , and possibly Republican John Young, who is the former Jefferson Parish President.
Stefanski most recently led the House GOP redistricting efforts.
