The New Orleans Saints have lost their third game straight after a missed 61-yard field goal to send it to overtime last Sunday. Key players Michael Thomas, Alvin Kamara, Marcus Maye, and Jameis Winston all missed the game, but NewOrleans.football analyst Mike Triplett says most of the team’s struggles have been self-inflicted…
“It’s been sloppy. Their special teams are sloppy. We know how good this team can look in spurts, especially on defense, and we know that’s enough to win games. They’ve been close even with all their mistakes, but they’re not good enough to keep making the mistakes they’ve been making.”
The Saints lead the league in fumbles and penalty yards, and many fans have called into question the discipline of Coach Dennis Allen and his staff. Triplett says that, while the buck stops there, responsibility needs to be shared…
“I’m sure the coaches wish there was something they could do differently that would stop those kinds of things, but I think the team’s playing pretty tight right now. With each passing loss all of a sudden it becomes a lot easier to play poised football.”
Backup quarterback Andy Dalton replaced the injured Winston and completed 20 of 28 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown. Amidst calls for Dalton to become the permanent starter, Triplett says Winston will have to be back to almost full health to reclaim his starting spot…
“I don’t think it’s a done deal that Jameis Winston has lost his job, but if Jameis Winston was 70 percent a couple weeks ago and now he’s 80 percent, I think It’d be pretty easy to say let’s keep getting you refreshed and really close to what you’re supposed to look like at full strength because obviously, the offense did a good job with Dalton.”
The Saints will attempt to correct their issues and bounce back at home against a Seattle team coming off a 48-45 victory over the lions this Sunday
