Netflix announced it’s about to start cracking down on password sharing next year. Host of Tech Gumbo Haggai Davis said for example if you’re a parent and your children live out of state or even out of town and are on your Netflix account expect to pay more.
“So, if my kids want to use my password, they have to use what they are calling subaccounts for an additional $3.99 per month, per user,” said Davis.
And for example, if your friend shares their password with you, Davis said Netflix will know that your IP address which is also the billing address, is not associated with your friend’s IP address.
“It’s a different internet protocol or IP addressing scheme, so yes Netflix will know that you’re a subaccount,” said Davis.
Davis said an issue Netflix will have to address is if you have an account and you use it on your phone, tablet, or even log in at the office on your lunch hour will you be forced to pay extra for a subaccount?
“You’ve got a streaming platform trying to decide what’s a household, where can you use the service that you’re paying for on your equipment? It’s a fascinating question that we’ve talked about on Tech Gumbo before,” said Davis.
Davis said Netflix has been testing their password credentials in South America and they are expected to roll out in the US next year.
