Update Suspected shooter in custody:
The suspected shooter in last Friday morning’s shooting at a Southern University fraternity house that injured eleven people is in custody. U.S. Marshals arrested 22-year-old Jaicedric Williams at his home without incident on Sunday afternoon. Williams has been charged with eleven counts of attempted first degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.
The Baton Rouge Police Department says a total of 11 people were injured in the shooting near Southern University’s campus early Friday morning, and three arrests have been made. BRPD Chief Deputy Myron Daniels said in a news conference late Friday they booked 28 year old Daryl Stansberry and 24 year old Miles Moss for accessory after the fact.
He says they believe this shooting was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat.
“Any witnesses or party goers with photos, videos or details associated with this incident is urged to contact Crimestoppers,” said Daniels.
Baton Rouge Police Lt. Don Coppola says officers responded to the Kappa Alpa Psi House on Harding Boulevard at around 2 AM Friday, and those who were shot all suffered non-life threatening injuries.
It’s homecoming weekend on the Southern campus and based on a flyer posted on social media, the fraternity was hosting a homecoming celebration. We spoke with a Southern student who was at the gathering.
“Everyone was having a good time, than shots rang out, I couldn’t see which direction they came from, I just heard them and everybody started running,” said a man at the scene.
Statement from East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome:
This morning, Baton Rouge residents, Southern University students and alumni woke up in anticipation of a joyous day as we celebrate homecoming. This joy was disrupted by the news overnight of a person or persons, who indiscriminately shot into a crowd of innocent people. Young men and women were senselessly injured while they were enjoying homecoming celebrations just off campus.
Since this incident began, I have been closely monitoring the situation, staying in constant contact with Chief Murphy Paul and Southern University.
We are working with all of our law enforcement agencies, local, state and federal—and will continue to support these agencies by making any resource available at our disposal.
As we speak, our law enforcement agencies are working around the clock to chase down leads and make arrests. Anyone with information should contact BRPD or Baton Rouge Crime Stoppers right away.
We will not allow this act of violence to go unchecked. We will bring the person or persons responsible to justice.
This incident speaks to a much larger issue of a rise in gun violence across this country. Frankly, I have had enough of senseless violence victimizing our people. We need to continue to engage leaders and communities at all levels, local, state and federal, to address underlying causes of violence and easy access to firearms. Our people deserve peace and we will not stop working to that end.
Statement from Southern University:
This morning, a shooting occurred near Southern University and A&M College. The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating. While this unfortunate incident happened off campus at a non-University sponsored event, the University strongly condemns any act of violence. We are keeping anyone affected by this incident in our thoughts. Officials, including the Southern University Police Department, are continuing to work to ensure that students, employees, alumni and other visitors to campus are safe during this Homecoming weekend. Details, including any changes to security protocols and Homecoming activities, will be shared as they are updated.
