Rep Steve Scalise (R) - LA
Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise and current House Minority Whip has made his intentions known he’d like to be House Majority Leader in January, but LSU political science professor Robert Hogan said until outstanding congressional races are settled it’s still up in the air if the GOP will be the majority party.
“The Red Wave that many people had anticipated, they’d hoped to gain a net gain of seats of 20, 30 or 40 members certainly didn’t materialize. They are going to be working with the thinnest of majorities assuming they are able to get a majority,” said Hogan.
Hogan said it makes sense that Scalise wants to be House Majority Leader because it’s the next step in the leadership ladder.
“So, this is a natural progression of his career this makes perfect sense, there’s of course some speculation he might have sought to gain the speakership, something that Kevin McCarty has votes lined up on,” said Hogan.
Hogan said previous representatives Louisiana has sent to congress have served in leadership roles.
“And this has helped out the state in terms of pork that gets thrown our way, so this is something that could be seen as beneficial,” said Hogan.
Scalise has served as House Minority Whip since 2018 and before Republicans lost control of the House he served as House Majority Whip.
