In Rapides Parish, an inmate jumped from the third floor of a parking deck trying to make an escape after a court appearance Monday morning. Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Tommy Carnline said the inmate was in court for an obscenity charge.
“As the inmate was being loaded, and this inmate was in full shackles, a belly belt, and handcuffs, actually jumped from our third-floor parking garage and to the sidewalk below,” said Carnline.
Carnline said the prisoner sustained a broken foot and leg and the incident happened after his court appearance as he was being transported back to the Rapides Parish Detention Center Three. The inmate’s name has not been released pending family notification.
“Due to the fact that he still is an inmate, he is still in our custody and for security reasons, we don’t release that information,” said Carnline.
And while escape attempts during court transportations have happened before, Carnline said he doesn’t recall an inmate ever jumping off the third story of the parking deck.
“That’s a pretty good ways, we’re talking probably 45 feet or so. I’m just thankful that he wasn’t injured any further,” said Carnline.
The inmate was transported to a local hospital and the incident is under investigation.
