In a statement released Monday morning Senator John Kennedy says he is considering entering the race for governor. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat thinks the Democrat’s victories in the Senate will influence Kennedy’s decision.
“I think we’re seeing Kennedy taking a look at the choice of being a senator or coming home and being a very powerful governor with a Republican legislature,” said Pinsonat.
Monday morning, after Kennedy released his statement, the Louisiana Republican Party doubled down on its endorsement of Attorney General Jeff Landry. The party issued a statement formally endorsing Landry even though news outlets reported the endorsement a week ago.
Consultant Roy Fletcher says the party’s announcement was premature.
“I think maybe they should have picked up the phone, they have those instruments now where you can talk to people without seeing them, or you can see them, while you’re talking to them. They should have picked up the phone and talked to him,” said Fletcher.
Kennedy was re-elected last week to a second term in the U-S Senate, but Democrats will keep control of the Senate. Political consultant Roy Fletcher says Kennedy will make a decision based on his own political ambitions and instincts.
“I think whatever decision John reaches will be outside of national politics it will be whatever he thinks he can or cannot do vs what other people can or cannot do for Louisiana,” said Fletcher.
Pinsonat says the overwhelming support Kennedy received in his reelection race set him up well to be leading candidate for governor.
“The names that are being bandied about are not comparable political figures as John Kennedy is statewide,” said Pinsonat.
Kennedy won reelection to the Senate with 62 percent of the vote.
Here’s is Kennedy’s statement:
“I’ve spent my life and career serving the people of Louisiana. Becky and I raised our family here and are so proud to call it home. But we can’t deny that our great state is facing serious challenges. To meet those challenges, Louisiana families deserve a governor who can lead our state and help solve our toughest problems.
“Over the last year, Louisianians have asked me time and time again to come home to serve as governor during these difficult times. Becky and I love the people of Louisiana. We’ve always listened to them, so I am giving serious consideration to entering the governor’s race. I’ll be announcing my decision soon.”
