Political buzz is afoot about who will or will not enter the race to be Louisiana’s next governor in 2023. The state Republican Party announced its support of Attorney General Jeff Landry. Another name being mentioned is District 6 Congressman Garret Graves, who’s been in the House since 2015. Graves says he’s had over a hundred people ask him if he would consider running…
“We’re getting, since the election, just a lot of pressure (to run). I think the general sentiment is that people are just not real enamored or not real excited about some of the candidates that are in the race right now,” Graves says.
U.S. Senators John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy, plus Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser and State Treasurer John Schroder are also considering running for governor. Graves says there are some possible opportunities to better represent Louisiana in Congress in the New Year, and he is weighing his options seriously…
“…and so we’re getting pushed by a lot of people to do it. It is something that my wife and I are going to think about and pray about over Thanksgiving.”
Another Republican considering the 2023 race for governor is St. Tammany Parish state Senator Sharon Hewitt, who is a committee chair and has authored numerous bills that became state law. Hewitt says she is also looking at her options…
“We’re watching, we’re polling, we’re working on it…and I think we’ll probably be in a position to make a decision in January,” says Hewitt.
She says she is deeply concerned about the direction of the state, and who will really work to make things better…
“The pace of improvement in the state of Louisiana is not happening fast enough. This is a really critical time for our state. Our students are getting left behind. Our businesses are leaving, Our kids are seeking greener pastures.”
Hewitt says her decision will be based on where she can be of best and most use to Louisiana.
