Louisiana State Police investigators have released more details about the death of an inmate yesterday at the St. Mary Parish Courthouse. Trooper Derek Senegal says an altercation occurred between the inmate and a corrections deputy in a deliberation room just outside a courtroom.
“They do know that one of the inmates that was with one of the deputies did sustain a gunshot wound,” Senegal said.
Senegal says the inmate was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead by the medical staff. He says the corrections officer was not injured. The LSP Bureau of Investigations was called in by the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office to investigate the incident.
“Of course the investigators or the detectives are still speaking with witnesses, speaking with the corrections deputy that was involved with that or whoever was in the area at the time,” Senegal said and added the inmate was at the courthouse on official business. Investigators are trying to figure out what led up to the incident.
“Right now we are early in the investigation we’re day two in the investigation, we do know there was some type of, it could be some type of scuffle,” he said.
He said the inmate’s identity will be released once his next of kin have been notified.
