State Representative Blake Miguez (R-Erath) returned home with a silver medal for team USA in the 2022 IPSC World Shoot halfway around the globe. Miguez, who’s been shooting since the age of twelve, is a former world champion pistol shooter and has found time to balance his passion for competitive shooting with politics. He and Team USA traveled to Thailand where Miguez finished in fifth place in his division. Miguez said the trip was an honor and a great experience for his entire family.
“I was very proud because I got to represent the USA shooting team, and I got to hold my daughter in my arms when we walked in [during the opening ceremonies]. They caught it on the TV screen, and it showed me and my daughter waving on the camera. That’s the memory that’s going to be in my mind forever
Miguez competed in multiple national-level competitions to earn the number two-ranked spot on the team. He balances shooting training on the weekends and during time off with representing the 49th district in the springtime. The 30-year competitive shooting veteran said this competition was especially challenging.
“It wasn’t just standing there and shooting, it’s very dynamic. We run through courses of fire, we jump up on things, jump down, shoot through windows, activate targets, shoot moving targets with hostages in front of them, so it’s very challenging.”
Miguez won the world competition in Greece 12 years ago and has previously been both national and world champion. He and team USA competed against nearly two thousand other shooters representing nearly 100 countries. Considering everything he has on his plate right now, he said he’s proud of his and his team’s performance.
“It’s very fulfilling, being over the age of forty and still be able to finish in the top five in our country and in the world, so I’m very happy with the finish.”
