Speed is the suspected cause of a double traffic fatality in Lafourche Parish Tuesday. Trooper Ross Brennan said it happened on LA Highway 1 just north of the Leesville Toll bridge in Golden Meadow. The preliminary investigation shows a Silverado driven by 43-year-old Archie Duet, Junior was traveling at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line, and swiped a Mack Dump truck.
“After sideswiping a dump truck, he struck a Honda Accord, that was traveling northbound head-on. The driver of the Honda Accord, 53-year-old Guy Dupierre, also of Cutoff, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene,” said Brennan.
Brennan said Duet was transported to a local hospital where he later died, and the driver of the dump truck was not injured.
“We’re still waiting on toxicology results from Mr. Duet and Mr. Dupierre. The driver of the Mack truck wasn’t suspected of being impaired, but he did provide a voluntary breathe sample that showed no alcohol detected,” said Brennan.
Brennan said they routinely see an increase in traffic fatalities this time of year. He said there are several factors, more people traveling, holiday parties, driving impaired, speeding, and driving distracted.
“It’s always a recipe I guess for disaster,” said Brennan.
The crash remains under investigation.
