Louisiana is letting the good times roll by kicking off King Cake season in honor of kings day. Publisher of the New Orleans Mardi Gras guide, Arthur Hardy says the celebration is just getting started.
“Big party at Mardi Gras world in New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell cut the King Cake and proclaimed carnival season is on and it’s a lot of activity here today in New Orleans,” said Hardy.
King cake is eaten on January 6 in honor of Epiphany, which historically marks the arrival of the three wise kings in Bethlehem who delivered gifts to the baby Jesus. Hardy says this tradition holds something special and memorable.
“What makes it so special is in the inside is buried a little plastic baby doll and if you get that, that’s the good news your the king or queen the bad news is your expected to buy the next cake for everybody,” said Hardy.
Typically, King cake is made with a rich, brioche dough and a wide array of fillings, such as cinnamon, chocolate, and cream cheese. Each cake is topped with the traditional green, gold, and purple sprinkles. Hardy says there is no right or wrong way to enjoy King cake.
“King cakes come in various sizes, shapes and fillings or non-fillings, but theirs no right or wrong really it can be whatever you want it to be but the main thing is that its just a fun dessert,” said Hardy.
