With Senator John Kennedy out of the governor’s race, it’s expected those who are running will make their intentions known by the end of the month. We’ve heard of several Republicans considering the office, but is there a clear frontrunner for Democrats? LaPolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford said one possibility is a current cabinet member of Governor John Bel Edwards.
“We know that DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson is looking at this race seriously. He’s someone that’s very close to the governor,” said Wilson.
In addition to Wilson, Alford said current state Democratic Party chair Katie Bernhardt has also been mentioned as a potential candidate. He said a statewide poll on Bernhardt was conducted Thursday.
“This would be kind of a big step for her. I asked her about it, and she told me she’s flattered to be included in this poll and that hopefully, it will show a path forward for Democrats,” said Alford.
Another possibility is East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore. Moore said he’s been approached about running for governor but said he’s very happy with his current job.
“I’ve spoken to people that have a lot more intelligence and information than I have. I respect them. I will continue to listen to them, but this is what I love doing,” said Moore.
Alford predicts by the end of the month; all of the potential gubernatorial candidates will have announced their intentions.
