Among the bills filed for the upcoming legislative session in April is one requiring every public school classroom and even postsecondary institutions, to display the national motto “In God We Trust.” Haughton Representative Dodie Horton authored the bill.
“I believe that to have it in every classroom, where every student can look and see that this is our motto and the reason, we have this as our United States motto is because we must trust in God,” said Horton.
Horton said the current law requires it to be displayed in each building but when she asked her grandchildren if they’d ever seen such a sign, they said they haven’t. Horton said the bill merely amends a current law.
“To me, it’s one of the most non-controversial bills that you’ll see my name attached to, as the world goes. So again, it’s just to amending current law to place our national motto in every school,” said Horton.
House Bill 8 also does not require public funds to purchase the displays. Horton said she did not want to burden the schools with an unfunded mandate.
“We could either have a donation drive or have other groups supply our public schools with these posters,” said Horton.
Horton said she’s looking forward to having the legislation reach the governor’s desk for signature.
