The first formidable Democrat announces his candidacy for governor, just two days after his official retirement from the Department of Transportation and Development. Dr. Shawn Wilson said it was his grandchildren who inspired him to run for the state’s highest office.
“As I think about the future I want for them, I want one that is going to be rooted in good policy, good judgment and be the bridge builder that I’ve been for the last seven years,” said Wilson.
Wilson who’s been a state employee for 25 years, said he’s worked with four different governors. He was appointed secretary by Governor Edwards in 2016 and has received an endorsement from his former boss.
“He understands the nature of the job, he understands the nature of how I’ve led and what I can do,” said Wilson.
Political analysts say the amount of campaign funds in one’s war chest often determine who will most likely win a race. Wilson’s formal candidacy was announced Monday after his retirement Saturday. Wilson, who said he did not raise any funds when he worked for the state, believes good leadership can’t be bought.
“I can look back to the days of David Vitter when he ran against Governor Edwards and he had the same financial advantage. I think big ideas will trump bib money every day, that does not phase me,” said Wilson.
Wilson will face six other declared candidates in the October 14th primary; four Republicans, one Democrat, and an independent.
