If you suffer from allergies, it’s probably not surprising that Baton Rouge and New Orleans rank in the Top 30 Allergy Capitals in the U.S. Hannah Jaffee with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America said they rank cities by tree, grass, and weed pollen counts.
“Then we also look at over-the-counter allergy medicine use, as well as the availability of board-certified Allergists or Immunologists in the area,” said Jaffee.
New Orleans ranks 22 and Baton Rouge came in last among the top 30.
When you compare the cities individually Jaffee said Baton Rouge and New Orleans rank worse than average for pollen.
“But both score average for medicine use. Baton Rouge also scores average for allergy specialists and New Orleans actually scores better than average for allergy specialists,” said Jaffee.
The report also offers advice on how to mitigate the effects of pollen for allergy sufferers. Jaffee said to check your local pollen count and forecast and to limit outdoor activities on high-count days. Keep windows closed as much as possible and use central air conditioning.
“And of course, talking to your allergists or your doctor about your allergies before allergy season begins so you can work on a treatment plan that really works for you,” said Jaffee.
