Women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey brought a national championship to LSU, now she wants a new or remodeled basketball arena. Mulkey made her demand during a speech in front of the Baton Rouge Rotary Club.
“See that PMAC, if they don’t get that sucker built before I retire, I’m going to give them Holy Hell, it’s time that thing is 48-years-old, it’s dangerous in there,” said Mulkey.
The Pete Maravich Assembly Center is actually 51 years old and 2009 was the last time major work was done to the facility. The PMAC lacks revenue generating suites and Mulkey says going up and down the stairs is dangerous.
After winning the school’s first national championship in basketball, Mulkey told WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge its time to start talking about a new arena.
“Talked about it at the state capitol when we went there, I’m going to talk about it publicly now because we’ve got to get the resources to do something, it’s time,” said Mulkey.
Mulkey says she doesn’t have a preference on whether to build a new arena or completely renovate the PMAC. The 60-year-old coach says she’ll leave that decision up to university leaders.
“I’m not visionary when it comes to thinking about a building, I just don’t know that we need upgrades, we don’t need to put a coat of paint on it,” said Mulkey.
One day after making a demand for a new arena, star point guard Hailey Van Lith announced she she’s transferring from Louisville to LSU. Van Lith averaged nearly 20 points a game last season as she led the Lady Cardinals to Elite Eight. In 101 games at Louisville, Van Lith averaged 15 points and 4 rebounds a game. She shot 38% from three-point territory.
