Alabama Baseball Coach Brad Bohannon was fired Thursday morning following reports of suspicious betting activity before last Friday’s game against LSU that suspended sports betting on Alabama baseball in Ohio, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The University released a statement saying Bohannon violated University standards duties and responsibilities, but Tiger Rag Editor Todd Horne said promise of further investigation makes him believe there’s a connection to the gambling.
“That statement alone makes me think that it has something to do with the gambling because they’re going to continue to investigate it before they expose more, and he’s going ahead and pulling the trigger and firing him.”
Bohannon named a new starting pitcher for Friday’s game less than an hour before first pitch. US integrity notified Ohio betting officials of two suspicious bets including one worth over six-figures for Alabama to lose which caused the closures, but Horne said LSU were heavy favorites anyway.
“What more than likely happened, if we want to make an assumption, is that someone on the Alabama team or the coach himself texted or told somebody ahead of time that that was the case.”
This isn’t the first time in recent months Bohannon has found himself under fire. Horne said he and two other coaches faced a lawsuit last month over the mishandling of Johnny Blake Bennet’s 2019 rib injury.
“There was an incident where a top player on the Alabama team accused him of not getting any treatment, and that was about a month ago and that was a formal accusation.”
The University will investigate the incident and Jason Jackson has been named interim Head Coach.
