Bills targeting the LGBTQ community are advancing in the Louisiana Legislature. Governor John Bel Edwards was asked about the legislation, and he said it worries him because of the increased likelihood of the trans population committing suicide.
“And these kinds of bills do nothing to help with that and in fact, they aggravate that situation, and they cause it to be worse,” said Edwards.
Among the bills is one prohibiting public-school teachers from discussing sexuality and gender identity, another forbidding gender-affirming health care for transgender minors, and restricting the use of certain pronouns in public schools.
Similar legislation is also being considered or has been enacted in other conservative states. Edwards was asked if he plans to veto any of the bills. Because the bills could still be amended, he said he’ll address it when and if they cross his desk.
“I find these bills to be misplaced, and unfortunate, and really damaging,” said Edwards.
When he travels the state and talks to individuals, Edwards said it’s not about LGBTQ issues.
“There are much, much more important pressing needs that we need to be focused on,” said Edwards.
He said it’s not a problem and he’s frustrated lawmakers are not focusing on topics to grow the state’s economy and improve education instead.
“I really wish we would get along, and love everybody as our brothers and sisters and not pick certain groups out and say we have to pass this legislation that is obviously an affront,” said Edwards.
