The Ragin Cajuns beat in-state rival LSU twice on Sunday during an epic day of softball in Baton Rouge . Sixth-year head coach Gerry Glasco is taking the U.L. Lafayette to the Super Regionals for the first time since 2016.
“It’s huge to get the gorilla, not monkey, get the gorilla off my back, and the girls did it, the players got the gorilla off my back, I didn’t do anything, they just stepped up one-by-one-by-one,” said Glasco.
In the first game, three different players hit home runs and Sam Landry pitched five shutout innings of relief in a seven-to-four win. In game two, Jourdyn Campbell had 5 RBIs and Chloe Riassetto had three shutout innings of relief to get the win.
The Cajuns lost to the Tigers in Regional play in 2021, 2018 and 2017.
The program also dealt with tragedy off the field. One of their biggest cheerleaders. Gail Savoie, the first lady of UL Lafayette died last year and Glasco says he’s determined to get to the Women’s College World Series for his daughter, Geri Ann Glasco, who died in a car accident in 2019.
“We’re going to get back in the World Series and part of the reason why I want to get there…we are playing for some real big people who are looking down on us,” said Glasco.
The Ragin Cajuns can get to the Women’s College Series if they beat Washington in a best out of three Super Regional Series that will start Friday night in Seattle (9 PM central time first pitch). Glasco has recruited well over the last few seasons, including the number one recruiting class in 2021, but he says the girls had to buy in.
“If you one player pouts and doesn’t trust you, it all goes down the tubes and it took the team a little while to accept that, it’s not easy to accept what we are doing, you got to play for the team, and now we got a team that’s willing to play for each other, so we are right where we need to be,” said Glasco.
