A three-vehicle crash in Jefferson Davis Parish claimed two lives Saturday night. Trooper Derek Senegal said for unknown reasons a motorcycle was struck from behind by a Camaro. 67-year-old Jacob Touchet of Iowa who was driving the Harley Davidson and passenger 60-year-old Susan Trahan of Lafayette were both killed.
“Of course, this caused Touchet and his passenger to be ejected from the motorcycle and be thrown into the northbound lane of travel and after the initial impact both riders were stuck by a northbound vehicle,” said Senegal.
Senegal said toxicology samples were taken, and troopers are still examining evidence to determine was led to the crash. He said the investigation includes an analysis of the vehicle’s Blackbox.
“They can download and figure out exactly what was going on if there was any breaking, what speed you were going, and things just like that,” said Senegal.
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and Senegal said the deadly crash is a reminder of how vulnerable motorcyclists are compared to cars and trucks.
“We’re driving vehicles that are 3,500 pounds or more, so we definitely want to give those riders and those motorcycles their space,” said Senegal.
