If you share your Netflix account with a friend or five, you’re going to see a price increase on your monthly bill if you plan to continue sharing your password outside of your home. Haggai Davis with General Informatics said primary account holders should be on the lookout for an email about the password crackdown.
“And when they say household, they mean people who live under your roof, not people you’re still responsible for like your children in college kind of thing or your neighbors or everybody else who you’ve been friends with,” said Davis.
Netflix has already begun the new restrictions in Canada and Spain and now the account-sharing protocols are now rolling out in the US. If you’re among the individuals who use your friend’s account Davis said, you’ll have the option to create your own account and keep your profile.
“All of the likes and the dislikes that you have through the years, the algorithm that Netflix knows what you like, that can transfer with you,” said Davis.
Davis said if you’re a Netflix consumer you either need to get ready to spend more each month or whittle down who you share your account with.
“So, if you’re one of these people whose username and password has been spread around 20 times you can expect an extra $160 per month on your Netflix account until you kick all those folks off your account,” said Davis.
Standard accounts can add one extra member while Premium accounts can add two extra members.
