It’s Memorial Day, a day to pay respects to those who’ve died while serving in the US military. Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Joey Strickland said they will be holding ceremonies at the state’s five veterans’ cemeteries and honor the more than 8,800 veterans interred there.
“We’re fortunate that we’re not at war right now but the sacrifice still has to be remembered and has to be honored,” said Strickland.
Strickland said he recently shared with a family member of a Vietnam vet his own experience at that time when so many were lost in battle.
“I still, 50 years later, remember the faces of the fallen on the battlefield and the Lieutenant that died in my arms,” said Strickland.
While the holiday is often celebrated with cookouts and fireworks, Strickland reminds residents to take a moment during their gathering to say a prayer and remember the true meaning of the day.
“And just tell their family members and their friends that we are here today to celebrate our freedom and to thank those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Strickland.
At the five veterans’ cemeteries in Louisiana, Strickland said they will also honor those who passed away after they completed their military service.
