The LSU Tigers are Omaha bound after taking down Kentucky last night eight to three to sweep the Baton Rouge Super Regional series. The game was tied at one in the third inning, when senior designated hitter Cade Beloso launched a three-run homer.
“I was just trying to hit a fly ball to center field, ended up getting a good pitch over the heart of the plate, put a good swing on it and it gave us the lead that’s what I was really excited about it, anytime you have a momentum in the postseason its huge,” said Beloso.
Dylan Crews hit a two run-double in the the ninth inning to cap the scoring. The two-time SEC Player of the Year admits he was nervous as he stepped up to the plate for the last time at Alex Box Stadium.
“I’m not going to lie, I’m nervous for every at-bat,” said Crews.
Left-handed relief pitcher Riley Cooper was the winning pitcher as he tossed three scoreless innings. Freshman Gavin Guidry struck out four in 2.2 innings to get the save.
Coach Jay Johnson is leading his third different team to the College World Series, but this one means a lot.
“When I was 12-years-old, I had an LSU baseball hat on, living in northern California, watching those purple jerseys run around Omaha all the time, so to get to coach this team in the College World Series…is really special,” said Johnson.
Johnson directs LSU to the CWS in just his second season after taking two different Arizona teams to Omaha.
“Coming here was a big move personally and professionally and just had a vision of what tonight would look like and I wanted these guys to experience that so bad,” said Johnson.
LSU will play the winner of today’s game between Tennessee and Southern Miss in the opening round of the College World Series. The Tigers first game in the CWS will be either Friday or Saturday.
